Sebastián splits his time between Brussels and New Zealand. He focuses his practice on food and nutrition regulatory and policy matters in the European Union and EU member states. With more than a decade of exclusive dedication to food regulatory matters, Sebastián represents a wide variety of multinational firms and trade associations with special focus on functional foods and drinks.
Prior to founding Food Compliance Int., he has practiced at international top law firms and in the European Commission. Sebastián is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
Sebastián has authored around one hundred scholarly articles in the food specialized press. He is a regular speaker at conferences all around the globe.
Lara is a partner based in Brussels working on a wide range of food regulatory and policy matters, with a special focus on dairy products, nutrition and health claims, novel foods, botanicals and GMO, as well as the application of general principles of EU regulations and national jurisdictions.
One of her recent noteworthy cases has been the application for the use of the term “probiotic” as a generic descriptor in the EU.
Lara further works on the regulatory clearance of foods, such as food supplements and fortified foods.
Prior to joining Food Compliance Int., Lara gained experience in an international law firm for several years, where she specialized in food and nutrition regulatory matters. She has also worked at the European Commission - DG Health, where she handled infringement procedures against EU Member States in the field of food hygiene, animal by-products, GMO and animal welfare and worked on the drafting of the legislative proposals for Foods for Special Groups (current PARNUTS), official controls, medical devices and tobacco products.
Joris is a partner based in Brussels with an unrivaled knowledge of the scientific and regulatory aspects of botanicals used in food, supplements and other products. During his years at the Belgian Ministry of Health, he acquired a vast experience in notifications and mutual recognition procedures in the EU. He follows closely all developments on novel foods, quality and safety requirements for nutrients, plants and other substances.
Joris started his professional career at a multinational chemical and pharmaceutical company where he acquired an in-depth knowledge of technical and scientific data, crucial to identify the ideal approach to market products. He then worked for seven years in the Belgian Ministry of Health where he gained his knowledge of European food law, food supplements and traditional herbal medicines. He worked with the experts of the Advisory Commission on Botanicals and extended his knowledge of these diverse ingredients.
Together with the authorities of France and Italy and three renown experts in pharmacognosy and botany he started a project for harmonization called BELFRIT. This harmonization project resulted in major regulatory changes in all countries involved. He was the chairman of the Policy Advisory Board in the European project PlantLIBRA which extended his broad network of authorities and experts on botanicals.
Before joining Food Compliance Int. he had his own consulting firm where he represented the interests of several firms and provided professional guidance.
